Julian Shah


Julian Shah trained in Medicine at Leeds University. After house jobs in Leeds and 6 months in Casualty he moved to Nottingham to start his surgical training. He then was a rotating registrar in Cardiff and then moved to Norwich to embark on his career in Urology. This lead to the Middlesex Hospital to work in the Urodynamic Unit with Dr Whiteside and Richard Turner-Warwick. He became a Senior Registrar to St Peter’s Hospitals and the Institute of Urology gaining specialist experience in the breadth of urology. One year of his Senior Registrar time was spent at Guy’s Hospital.

Julian Shah has now worked for 25 years as Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Urology and for the St Peter’s Hospitals group as consultant urological surgeon, now a part of UCLH. Though appointed as an academic urologist he provides a dedicated clinical service to UCL Hospitals.

He has developed an expertise in a number of highly specialised areas within urology and has become one of the leading authorities in the treatment of female incontinence and neuro-urology.

He is Director of the Urological Unit for the Spinal Cord Injuries at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where he spends one day each week. Recently he has been joined by Mr Rizwan Hamid as his new consultant colleague to share a rapidly enlarging workload.

Over the years he has continued to raise funds to support a number of research fellows both at the Institute of Urology and at the RNOH. Through his efforts at the RNOH he has set up an exemplary unit that has enabled the neuro-urology unit to grow substantially. Most recently the Neuroprothesis Unit at the RNOH in conjunction with his colleague Professor Craggs received the staff achievement award for research and teaching.

Mr Shah is a popular teacher for medical students in urology for UCL. He organised the Diploma in Urology course for many years, now organised by Miss Greenwell. He is the chairman of the Board of Examiners (Dip Urol). We have over the years received many visitors from the UK and overseas who have spent time with Mr Shah in the operating theatre and outpatient clinics. Strong links have been forged with many units around the world.

Mr Shah is regularly invited to lecture and operate both in the UK and overseas.

Mr Shah continues to publish articles in journals, and has written and edited a number of books. He also contributes to many other research based projects.

His clinical interests are particularly expert in the female with complex urinary incontinence, neuro-urology and reconstructive surgery. He is a the lead consultant in the Female /Reconstructive Surgery firm at UCL Hospitals where he works in close co-operation with Miss Greenwell, Mr Ockrim and Mr Hamid.
